However, it is easy to recognize the problem, as during rough idling either the engine would run at an irregular rate or it may have varying RPMs without your foot on the gas pedal.
I know the idle mixture screw is set to the correct factory setting, and the idle screw is adjusted properly to 700 rpms. So the other day i was warming up my truck before work it usually idles high because of cold start,but after the idle drops to 1000 RPM after it warms up...but then the other day it didnt drop the idle started to push up higher to about 1500 RPM consistent.First thing i had done was tone down the idle screw,when the idle had dropped back down to 1000 RPM a white cloud of smoke started to come ... I need to do a tuneup on the 1.9L WBX in the Westy as I'm tired of the bog off idle once she's warmed up - starts quickly, idles fine when cold and warm (a bit sticky on the decel) idle control switches clicking at the right time. Need to test the single-wire O2 sensor, the TempII sensor, CO adjustment or other.
Based on your description, we’d recommend checking the spark plugs to make sure they are not deteriorated or fouled out. When the engine is started cold, regardless of the outside temperature, the idle is rough and there is a noticable power loss. However, once the engine reaches FULL operating temperature the idle is smooth and power returns.
